I was in the store walking for about an hour. When I got home I knew I had pushed myself but I was OK.
I was able to finish re-potting the planters damaged by the hail last summer. Now I have a room full of plants ready to be released to the deck. Now we have to wait for warmer air.
Vince worked on the raised beds as he wants to be finished by Tuesday night so he is ready for the Sandostatin injection by the oncologist onWednesday. The beds look so awesome and it is such an improvement.
I spent some time this afternoon knitting on "the gift". It is so relaxing for me even though the needles are size 3. It grows very slowly however.
I was able to find some adhesive so I could bond a small glass dish and an old vase to create a soirée of water for birds and butterflies. I will place the piece in one of my planters. I will take a picture when everything is moved to the deck.
Just gets my creative juices going! Last year I painted clay pots and bonded those together for added color to the yard. I gave those a shot of paint today. All in all I didn't feel like I got much done but it seems to have added up.DocSlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14858385264072943975noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5540398811134846406.post-72707083187138639742013-05-04T12:35:00.002-07:002013-05-05T20:04:13.952-07:00Fireplace on and spring cleaning the sun porch
I can't believe how such a pleasant little room can get so nasty. Go figure as plants drop leaves, pets reside here in the sunny windows and dust just multiplies if ignored. So I am spending my feet time today in this room. I have the gas fireplace blazing and some Josh Groban crooning to help me focus on the finished product.
Vince is outside again for his therapeutic activity. He put the solid paver top row on the western of the three beds. It looks amazing! He had an uncle who was a mason and built at least two beautiful churches, one in Spearfish and one in Rapd City, South Dakota. I think Vince has it in is genes.
My knees have told me it is time for ice and elevation. Now I get to read snout what my blogger friends are doing. Will attach a beautiful maple table Vince made for me. Two old tangle leaves someone had painted found in a garage and given to him. The base has a story! My "little sister" (story for another day) found he base in an alley dumpster and stored it in her garage for a couple of years . She took it to Restore and while visiting her last summer I found it in the Restore store. Not having any idea of anything she walked up and asked why I was holding it. I said I am going to buy it and we giggled for over an hour about OUR great taste.
I get up and advance a plan only to have to sit again and ice for awhile. The Dr. said I was doing remarkedly well and he was impressed. I left his office yesterday with 30 less staples.
This is the time of year when I re-pot and re-virtualized my plants inside so that some can move back outside. I plan e-mail my lifelong friend Jane about some herb planting. She has a phenomenal blog called Thyme for Herbs. I have some magic way of killing herbs and I am convinced this year I can have some in containers on the deck.
Vince has decided to give his raised beds total wall replacements. First we laid green timbers and when those began to give we started stacking bricks but now he has ripped all out, laid footings and is putting the bricks itch mortar so we no longer have soil leaching out. It is looking so great. Kevin has been helping him and it is a blessing to see Vince pushing himself.
I have not been doing much quilting as I cannot sit at the machine for long at a time. I have lots of UFOs that haunt me. My friend Sara is one who sets goals and accomplishes wonders. I have a delightful knitting project started for an autumn birthday. Since it is on size 3 needles I keep working as I recuperate. I love the colors in it.
It is delightful to see a blue sky, hear the birdsong, and finally have no snow. I will try to attach a picture of raised beds. Have to learn how to do that.DocSlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14858385264072943975noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5540398811134846406.post-42158116910391663972012-11-03T21:12:00.000-07:002013-05-04T13:54:15.221-07:00The Other Side of the RoomWe have been working for two days. More Vince than I but the shower has been removed from the guest room and this area will become shelving for the plastic storage boxes I use for fabric. He is repairing and replacing wall board to make it clean and shiny.
In the meantime I organized and picked up pieces to sew and make UFOs "more complete". Now that all the projects are moved to the new room I realize I have seven hangars full of pieces to be quilted.

I am adding some pictures for the other side of the room. Vince built the lower unit four years ago to help store the fat quarters. The top unit is new this fall. He does most of his work with hand tools like all of the dovetails in the drawers are hand cut. The top set of drawers are made of walnut. It is beautiful but also very useful. The top two shallow drawers hold my threads.

The lower drawers hold ribbons, buttons, bindings I have ready for projects, and one of the drawers holds tools like the sharpener I use to sharpen rotary cutter blades. A place for everything and everything in its place. Needless to say I am very lucky to have such a handy husband.

The first project was to put an egress window in the lower level room (originally the maid's sitting room) and add a shower in the space taken from the laundry room. This was the first student bedroom we had and when the college students stopped living with us, it became the guest room.

On the second floor of our house we have three bedrooms and two baths. The bedroom on the front of our house has now become my office. The bedroom on the back of the house is a beautiful room with huge windows and the southern exposure assures warmth and sunlight. Everything is great except the size. Four years ago when we bought my Grand Quilter we realized the room is just 13 feet by 10 feet so it has been a COZY quilting room.

While working on our Christmas projects my friends and I have been scheming about how we could use more space. Dah-da. The room in the basement is 13 feet by 16 feet! So the moving has begun.
I will post pictures later today.
This large bookcase was in the guest bedroom in the basement. We moved it out into the hallway outside the bedroom and put all of my special children's book that I use when I teach Children's Literature or have a captive grandchild on my lap. Then I began to move my yarn stash out of the closet in the former quilting bedroom. These are all special yarns which I have separated from the C&C stuff that is not so special.
The first piece to be moved was my design wall. Just a piece or oilcloth (that is what my Grandma called it) reversed and hung on a nice looking board Vince mounted near the ceiling of the west wall of the new room next to the door. Two of the projecs are finished on the design wll and I just wanted you to see them. I am expecially pleased with cabin scene. On the back of the door I will have a place to hang finished projects like the "I Believe in Santa" wall hanging. The beautiful crocheted afghan hanging was a gift from my grandmother many years ago. We meet once a week and cut, press, and sew together. We make three of everything so that each one of us has one to keep or give as we see fit. Thus far we have made two wall hangings, three table runners and this week we made a lap throw for each of us. The time when we are together flies by and we seem to get a great deal done.
I will atch some pictures of what we have accomplished. I have always wanted to get things done ahead of time and not feel the pressure of last minute sewing and this year we are doing it.
I find there are certain days I go into the quilting room and I am drawn to colors and not so much to other colors. I am brainstorming the fabric for one of my "package" design quilts for a Christmas gift. I am just fascinated by the number of red hues there are in the industry. So because of that, I have decided to use forest green with the black background piece I have decided to use. Pictures later.
About the crayons in the box. . . Lately I have been pulling them out like crazy. My primary color has been blue as it relates to my husband and his health issues right now. It seems we have spent two months in and out of medical offices. I have been taking my knitting along to stay calm and wait for results of tests and appointments. I am blue about his pain, frustrations, and the worry of what the prognosis may be.
Another color vivid to my life this past week was yellow. I spent six days working the field with colleagues from Ohio. We are working with teachers to promote innovation in their classrooms to make the learning more relevant and culturally appropriate. I feel bright yellow when I think about the changes in these Native American childrens' education as the result of the planning their teachers did last week.
I am red with excitement regarding our family vacation coming up next week. The chance for Papa and I to spend a week with our children and their families is just too much to anticipate. I am planning games and meals and can hardly wait to swim and watch them have some fun.
DocSlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14858385264072943975noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5540398811134846406.post-80854949634772570622012-07-09T21:01:00.002-07:002012-07-09T21:01:32.216-07:00It Is About Time. . .Time is something we waste, watch, and lose if we are not careful. Time is a matter of priority. I have been thinking about posting because I really have been busy sewing and creating but then time gets away from me.
I have a number of projects to share with pictures and I will start doing that with this blog. I have been organizing and trying to make reason out of my chaos in the sewing room. Vince has helped with that and I will show you his addition. I have a new sewing machine which is lovely. Finally I had a chat on Saturday with two quilting friends and we started to plan for our Christmas projects. We met at my house because I won the prize for most stash and we have a great start on our first endeavor. I will keep you posted.
Now for my first update. My friends at the Chamberlain quilt shop sent me a pattern last spring for a birthday crown and we decided this would be a nifty tradition for our little Magdalyn. So she is wearing the crown I made her for her second birthday which was in June.
As I was viewing sites pertinent to quilting, I came across a quilt covered in spools (I have always saved my wooden thread spools from Grandma's sewing drawers). Anyway that idea intrigued me.
The next day I had a visit from my two little grandsons who live in our town and needed a place to stay because the blizzard was blocking the road to their day care. Such a problem! I love having them visit and they wanted two new pillowcases which were not a problem to make out of my stash. While I was sewing, they were investigating the storage totes in my room and the next thing I knew they had two years of selvages heaped on the floor. I should have taken a picture as it was as good and jumping in a pile of leaves in the yard. They began to find pieces they liked and I decided to make little bags for them. I took jean pant legs below the worn out knees and covered them with selvage pieces they selected. Turned and seamed across the bottom of the leg and trimmed the top edge with rick rack and we called them "Ricky Racky Sacks". They were enchanted and I even gave them some nickels to put in the bags. Then we played "hide the thimble", a game I truly love and they got to take home the thimble in one of the bags. Oh the wonderment of a three and four year old!
Laying awake and thinking about the sewing room led to my creation. I asked my very talented husband if he could cut a piece of wood that would resemble a spool. We drew it up and measured my selvage pieces I had already created. 6 inches wide and 11 inches long. One of the spools is all the numbered parts of selvage where they give you the color guide. I just couln't bear cutting the top and bottom pieces out of brown cloth and then try to back it with something. The wooden back seemed so much sturdier and I intended to make these hang on the wall. Well, as always, Vince used his skills and imagination and thus we have created another "Pay it forward" gift. This one goes to my long time friend from junior and high school in Michigan. She has a blog about herbs and loves to garden so I used selvages with floral prints as her spool. What do you think?
I love to knit and decided to felt a bag for Allison's dear friend, Susan, who replied to my FB post. I love the colors and I am still experimenting with how many stitches for certain yarns. This is Brown Sheep Bulky and I love to handle it and it is quality yarn. This time I made the strap of the felted piece by folding a strip in half and stitching on the sewing machine then I finished it with a blanket stitch of the black. I then needle felted her initial with a simple dot or three. I love it and I hope she does also.
For the phone, I combined the two with an old fork that I bent into a hook for keys and away we go.
I painted over the words and added a pair of scissors Cathy gave me a few years ago for sewing room decor. Found this lamp on the clearance table for even more off the price. Loved it and since I don't have any original thoughts, I had seen a number of things decorated with the lyrics to one of my favorite songs, "You are my sunshine". So I took the linen type shade and a permanent marker and printed the words on the shade. I have loads of buttons in a jar in my sewing room so I added some color with various buttons. The word love looks like a botch but really it is a heart shaped metal button I found in the jar. I love it the look.DocSlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14858385264072943975noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5540398811134846406.post-45227805877852999182012-02-07T11:52:00.000-08:002012-02-07T11:52:42.115-08:00Can't Believe It is FebruaryWe just got back from a ski weekend with my son and his wife and two of his three sons. We had a great time and I carried my knitting with me once again. I am working on a project for a Pay It Forward I joined on Facebook. The first project is something for a high school friend of mine and I am anxious to finish it and send it to her in Michigan.
While we were out west we visited Vince's cousin, Cleo and her husband Alan. It is wonderful to connect with family. Vince was an only child and values his relationship with his first cousin. We will visit them again soon. They have a lovely home and she is an excellent cook. It reminded me of the title of my blog, seams sew simple. We don't take enough time to be with the people we love and enjoy our lives.

The decoration above is something I saw on Pinterest and decided to replicate for Valentine's Day. Buttons, white top straight pins, yarn, ribbon, and time. It was fun to make.DocSlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14858385264072943975noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5540398811134846406.post-46591160676845123092012-01-17T16:33:00.000-08:002012-01-17T16:33:36.320-08:00Hand Muff for a little person

When I was a little girl I had a muff that I carried to keep my hands warm. With all of the repurposing ideas floating around, I decided to have some fun with a pair of my wool socks having a hole in the heal. First I cut the top (luckily these have stripes and it made that easy) right above the heal and I gently zigzaged a hem in each top. These will make little leggings for my granddaughter. Be careful not to stretch too much but you will get a little bit of a flair. I have done this with socks before. Now come the new creative part.
Then I cut the foot just below the heal part. Obviously the heal is scrap and I threw that bit away. Now about the hand muffs- Turn the socks inside out so that the right side of the sock will be where the little hands will go. I then overlapped the toes of the socks so that inside the muff the little fingers will ouch easily.
Then pull the outside out and turn it over the inside tube. I hand stitched the other end to finish.

I made a tube with scrap of quilting batting. This is wool batting so I wanted the extra warmth. I stitched around each end of the tube which was wide enough to match the cut end of each sock. The tube is about 10 inches long. I then took a scrap of some soft fuzzy material and made another tube by stitching the right sides together.
I have been knitting for almost 60 years and I have a variety of sizes, types, and the like and this way I can go to this closet and find the needles I need quickly for the next project. I also store all of my grandmother's and mother's crochet hooks in one of the pockets.
DocSlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14858385264072943975noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5540398811134846406.post-5459657737750762742011-03-24T19:54:00.000-07:002011-03-24T19:54:09.139-07:00One arm activitiesIt has been a productive week even though I just have one real arm that works. Rotator cuff tear and repair is no fun especially since it is my right shoulder. I had the same surgery three years ago on my left and as my hubby says, "honey, aren't you glad you only have two shoulders?" This one seems to have more issues with pain in the bicep. Starting PT earlier is also giving me something to ice about.
I really practiced self control and only picked out two alikes to make some cute dresses for little M. After we shopped my friends came over to trim up some squares so I could make more spinwheels for the Spoof quilt. I just love the batik squares. Pam also cut some sashing strips for the Woodland Holidays quilt top. I did some stitching of 9 blocks today.
I am able to stitch things as long as it doesn't weigh too much and I can keep my right hand in front of me by my chest. I am unable to cut and I am learning to press with my left hand and arm. I never realized how much our shoulder is involved in everyday arm and hand movements. Oh well, I will survive.
In the meantime, I asked my man to place all of my Christmas/holiday/winter fabric into the master bedroom so I could sit on the floor and sort pieces into plastic tubs for more organized storage in the hall closet. I bought the plastic tubs that stand about 8 inches deep and are about 16 by 24 inches rectagularly from WalMart. I am using old conference plastic name badge holders to label the tubs. I used to use permanent marker and write on the tub but this way I can designate the storage without permanence. I sit with the ice on my shoulder and am inspired with projects that will lend to my organizational realm. Consequently, two drawers, one box and a small three drawer chest were consolidated into four tubs. One tub has all of my Christmas fat quarters, one has primarily red and green large pieces, one tub has coordinated fabrics for projects, and the final tub has smaller cuts in all colors. I still have one small drawer in the chest that has bits and pieces (scraps).
Also today I took better stock of my UFOs. I realized I have projects that I have not even started and was listing them as unfinished. That is really disgusting! I have enough UFOs that I don't need to add the purchased but not started projects also.
The show and tell at Saturday Sampler was amazing. I admire the colors and work of talented people. The "ooo and ahhhh" meter is fun. I decided I would finish one queen size quilt before next Saturday Sampler (April 9) and one table runner for my dining room. I spent some time today laying out the grid for the Wildflowers blocks that we made for the scholarship quilt and what I wanted to add to make the top big enough for our bed. I am making thirteen pinwheel blocks to add. I don't know what I will make for the runner but I have significant stash to use. I also have to finish one diaper bag, 10 squares for benefit quilt, and one star block for a project I read about on one of my favorite blogs http://modafabrics.blogspot.com/2011/03/just-one-star.html. There I have set my goal and will probably be able to spend about an hour each day (since I am on leave from work) quilting.DocSlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14858385264072943975noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5540398811134846406.post-85968821235486085992011-03-07T08:29:00.000-08:002011-03-07T08:29:31.884-08:00No names to protect the . . .So, I suggest to a friend, we get together and try to complete the first block of our new Saturday Sampler since we both quit last year's cause it "was way too difficult" for us beginners. This new pattern is very straight forward and could not look simpler on paper. Now remember, I am on "drugs" for the pain after shoulder surgery so all I am good for is reading and pinning. My visiting nurse, dear little sister-in-law, is not a quilter but we arm her with the iron (what can she mess us with that) and eventually to assist with project, the rotary cutter (I know that is not safe practice for beginner). Quilting friend is at the machine. Well I can't remember how the bobbin goes without sitting down in front of maching and I am hooked up to the Polar Ice Machine so we maneuver until we get the machine threaded with white thread instead of red. Then I begin to read and sort out the batiks squares and discern what is considered light and what is considered dark and then get our two sets of batik squares fully integrated (that could be disaster but didn't seem so at the time). We commence work and get a real system going. Do step number 1 for both blocks and begin step two. Seems like step 2 is a repeat of step one, just using different color blocks. Well, that is when the "drug stupor" kicked in because if I had been in a better mental state, I would have notices I had underlined "DO NOT TRIM" in the directions and thus things went down hill from there. We laughed and played frogy "rippit-rippit" but as we all know, once we have trimmed, we have trimmed. Cindy's voice came back to me, "if you mess up don't come into the shop and ask for more fabric cause . . ." Let us just say "Block #1 is finished.DocSlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14858385264072943975noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5540398811134846406.post-70965503487987813792011-03-05T11:00:00.000-08:002011-03-05T11:00:16.058-08:00Makin' for Magdalyn

I finished this little beret for her out of some very fine soft wool yarn last week. Every now and again, the snow drops from the upper roof to the lower roof of our great room and a loud plop alarms the dog and cat. It is enough to awaken the dead. I am sitting in the sun doing the work I can do while waiting for tomorrow. Doctor asked that I not visit any schools today as we have a tremendous amount of influenza cases and she doesn't want me to be exposed before surgery. I am really able to catch up on some necessary details and reading which is good.

I knitted a bonnet for Magdalyn while I was watching the Oscars last night. I am just so in love with PINK. I found the sparkly rose in DC and just knew I could make a darling hat for our little angel to wear. I wish I knew where I bought the ribbon like yarn. The ruffly brim will frame her face. I will ask Allison to take a picture so you can see it too.
I will have to take advantage of the help offered by friends to finish the blocks. The quilt will be all batiks and the pattern is called Roll On. From the looks of just one block, I think it will be delightful. The cream batik will be used by all 8 of us making blocks and the other batiks come from stash. A high school group of students who work on creating skits regarding issues will sell tickets to raise money so they can get additional training for their work. The group is called "Spoof".
I seem to be able to knit with my lame shoulder. We'll see if I can after surgery. If not, I will just read and try to relax. Vince is working on our new table for the great room. We designed an intimate size for us to enjoy time together while we share a bowl of oatmeal or soup. He loves using hand tools for his wood working. We are a "crafty" pair.DocSlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14858385264072943975noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5540398811134846406.post-46943114384408916942011-02-26T19:56:00.000-08:002011-02-26T19:56:49.806-08:00D@&$ Rotator CuffI went upstairs to my clean quilting room to try to do some work and I can't even lift the iron due to the tear in the rotatro cuff. I will persist tomorrow as if I can atleast sew the binding on some boutique burpees, I could do the hand work after the surgery on Tuesday. I though of yet another UFO, I have started a "present" pattern lap quilt I need to add to the list. I have set a goal to complete many unfinished objects folded neatly in the quilting room. Last month Vince and I moved shelving around and added some shelves to the closet off my quilting room and I did a major cleaning job. I decided I would not buy any fabric unless I needed it to finish a UFO. I must stick with this. Sew. . . this is a start to the list: a diaper bag for Cathy's daughter-in-law (the baby was born last week, oops), a beautiful Woodland greetings quilt for our bed (the charm packs were a gift from a friend who knows I love cardinals), the Christmas star blocks from a share-a-block project need to be put together into a quilt, the Wildflowers blocks from a share-a-block project need to be put together into a quilt, and now I have started the Saturday Sampler at the Pin Cushion and must complete my block each month (I selected the batik colorway). That is a start. I am going to add a picture of Magdalyn in the dress I knit for her first Valentine's Day. She is eight months old.DocSlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14858385264072943975noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5540398811134846406.post-58607831528255732902010-12-26T19:23:00.000-08:002010-12-26T19:23:41.841-08:00Merry ChristmasWe just arrived home from Minnesota and a wonderful Christmas together.
